The word ‘gratitude’ is powerful.  Being grateful can make us feel open and expansive, allowing us a grander perspective on our world.  Spontaneous feelings of gratitude are wonderful, but more often than not it is something to cultivate in our own personal garden.   This is especially true on the days when we feel it least, when those tender shoots of gratitude need the most protection.  Changing our viewpoint using gratitude can bring about meaningful change in your perspective.  Imagine looking at your life through a camera lens that was just a little bit of focus, you can make out the image, but it is a little hazy.  Gratitude is a way to refocus, it allows for awareness of what is good,...

The Principles of Back Bending as Heart Opening

Yoga can be described as a balancing of opposites.  The energy that drives our practice, our breath, containing both the inhale and the exhale is a perfect example of that.  When we look at a beautiful backbend, what we are also looking at is an opening of the chest.  It is a radiant expression of gratitude for ours hearts and all we have to share.  It takes time, attention and care to feel this good in a backbend.  Often we can fall into the trap of straining to come into the shape without allowing for the chest to open, resulting in tightness or discomfort.  At the other end of the spectrum, we may bend too much in the places where...
